Genesis of the Brand

Origin Story

We wanted to start a brand that merged our passion for social justice & equality, with paying tribute to our late mother, Yamin Hazarika, the very first female police officer from the northeast of India, and a trailblazer in the realm of women’s rights in the 1990s. Thus, Yamin was born.

Yamin is an inclusive brand that aims to uphold the values of human & civil rights, along with fostering an environment of acceptance through the medium of fashion. We try to be as inclusive as we can in terms of the imagery/content we create and feature. At Yamin, we understand the importance of representation & diversity, and work towards being an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community through the year, and not just during pride month in June. We collaborate with individuals whose art/work/vision we truly admire, and not just as a form of tokenism. Yamin, as a brand aims to be as authentic & transparent as it can be. The idea is not to sell our customers a dream/an aspirational lifestyle, but to empower them through the power of choice. Choices pertaining to the brands they support, and the causes they stand behind. We seek to not just equip our customers with beautiful products, but also welcome them to join a growing community of socially just thinkers and doers, who uphold values of equality, compassion & understanding.

The Designers

Founded by siblings Huma & Vikram Hazarika, Yamin makes good use of their combined experience working in fashion over the past 10 years. Huma Hazarika completed her schooling from Welham Girls' School, Dehradun, after which she pursued Journalism Honours from Lady Shri Ram College, New Delhi and went to work as a writer with Indian Express, First City and Vogue.in. She also dabbled in fashion & lifestyle PR. Merging her love for jewellery with animal rescues(something she has been involved in actively over the past 3 years, facilitating the feeding, vaccinating and sterilising of street animals), Yamin proved to be the apt starting point for her entrepreneurial journey. Vikram Hazarika pursued a Bachelors in Fashion Design from Pearl Academy of Fashion in New Delhi, and also did a course in fashion communication from Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan, Italy. He then went on to work in editorial fashion, styling & photographing shoots for magazines, brands & online publications. His keen perception of pop culture & fashion, blends itself seamlessly in his creative direction for Yamin. Vikram is also an advocate for mental health awareness, and has a podcast called Communion, that examines the intersection of mental health with a multitude of topics such as gender, identity, trauma, body image, abuse and art.
